Connections to "Meaningful Learning with Technology"
Reference databases are key resources for students. While 'Meaningful Learning with Technology barely speaks to the reference databases, their importance in student research can clearly be inferred. Due to the vastness of the Internet, the authors explain the need for multiple skills and search strategies; students need to know how to search, evaluate, and organize the information to make it manageable. Unfortunately, the use of databases are often neglected. Utilizing an online database would be a key research strategy, in that databases are a focused resource designed with school curricula in mind. They are also designed with the students being the user and are there to support the researcher, often offering additional links to relevant information and often with support to citations. Another point that the authors addressed is that of internet access versus safety. In chapter 2, Investigating With Technologies, Information Gathering with Internet Resources . The authors discuss the issues with Internet filtering, as internet results are vast, varied, and possibly inappropriate. Databases provide thoughtful, selective resources that need not be "filtered". Unlike the web, students know that the information provided in databases is authentic, unbiased, and on point
